So the idea here was basically to take the past three or so years of rap and map it onto the first three years or so of the Britney/BSBs teenpop boom.

I have plenty to say about teenpop or teen pop or Teen Pop or whatever you want to call it — and I said plenty (though not a ton about the era featured here, roughly 1998-2001) in this feature I wrote for Stylus a few years ago, The Bluffer’s Guide to Post-2000 Teenpop. As for the rap, I tried to keep it between 2009-2011, though obviously we won’t know if there was any sort of sea change in this period (a la the post-Spice Girls, more specifically post-Cheiron bubblegum boom from ‘98 to ‘01) until ten years from now, when maybe I’ll be putting Britney’s vocals for her 17th album to an old Zaytoven beat.
